Information for students and others about the program

The most successful engineers tend to be independent-minded problem-solvers with the broad skill set to tackle a variety of problems. As an Integrative Engineering major your career will be grounded in fundamental math and science courses equal to that of our four traditional B.S. engineering majors. You will advance through a set of rigorous core courses (Systems I, II, and III) where you are taught the systems modeling approach and gain a variety of analysis, data acquisition, and modeling skills. These skills are applicable to a broad range of dynamic systems, such as biomedical, electrical, electromechanical, environmental, fluids, and thermal applications. Your final systems course (Systems III) is specific to your chosen focus area: bioengineering, environment and energy, or robotics.

Along the way you will work with your advisor to select electives that are most relevant to your focus area. Your engineering electives may come from any of the five other engineering departments and programs (Civil, Chemical, Electrical, Mechanical, and Engineering Studies). In addition, you may select two courses from a related program, e.g., from Biology for those in the Bioengineering focus area, or perhaps from Environmental Science & Studies for those with an Environment & Energy focus.

After graduation

Upon graduation, you will be well-qualified to enter the job market (private or public sector) or pursue graduate study and research in your particular focus area. Once the program achieves ABET accreditation in a few years, you will also be eligible to take the engineering licensure exam. You are strongly encouraged to be proactive in working with the Gateway Career Center to explore potential internship and career opportunities and take advantage of our network of alumni.
